In his book, understanding a photograph, John Berger said that a good photograph contains either of the following elements. Is the moment running away? Is something palpably missing? What happened next or before? Is it speaking volume about some culture or tradition?
These factors don't let us move on. Such aspects do not let us forget the image.
Many of the photographs displayed in the ongoing exhibition by DCP Expeditions at The Bombay Art Society present us with one or the other elements out of the list indicated above.
For instance, in the following photograph, we keep wondering if the deer could finally escape the cheetah! Since the answer is not within the frame of the photograph, our mind joins the race of the animals. We keep wondering what happened in the end.
In another photograph, the ominously dark sky looming over the grave tiger makes us also worried. Is there a thunderstorm about to rage the barren landscape? Is the tiger going to be safe?
In the following photograph, we are stuck immediately because something counter-intuitive hits our brain through our eyes. We are used to the side view of boats. But in this image, the side views are missing whereas the top views tell us that those are boats down there. A sensational adjustment happens among the neurons. We end up being thrilled and refreshed.
In the following photo, we wonder what the loins are looking at. One of the lions is roaring. Why? What kind of threat or prey has it noticed?
